What 5G changes
5G adds new frequency bands and a new radio design on top of 4G. Where coverage is good, it gives much higher speeds and lower latency, which is enough to run an office, stream several HD cameras or support a busy event site. Where 5G is weaker, the router uses 4G and your fixed IP stays exactly the same.
Coverage is growing fast. Following their network integration, Vodafone and Three report that their fastest 5G now reaches around 71 percent of the UK population, while EE and O2 continue to expand their own 5G networks.
5G non-standalone and standalone
Most UK 5G today is non-standalone. It uses a 4G core with 5G radio for extra speed. Standalone 5G uses a new 5G core and unlocks features such as lower latency and network slicing, where a slice of capacity can be reserved for a service. Operators are rolling standalone 5G out gradually. A modern 5G router supports both, so the same SIM and router will benefit as standalone arrives.
5G fixed wireless access with a fixed IP
Fixed wireless access means using a 5G router, often with an outdoor antenna, as the main broadband for a building. It is quick to install, needs no digging and can be moved. Adding a fixed public IP lets you run VPNs, remote access and hosted services just as you would on a leased line. For backup, a 5G router with a fixed IP can take over from fibre within moments and keep your VPN tunnels and remote access working.
Choosing a 5G router and antenna
5G routers such as the Teltonika RUTX50 and RUTM50 combine 5G with dual SIM failover and wired WAN, so one box can manage fibre, 5G and a backup network. 5G performs best with a clear signal, so an external MIMO antenna is worth considering for any fixed installation, especially inside steel framed or low emissivity glass buildings.
Questions we are often asked
Do I need a special SIM for 5G?
Our fixed IP SIMs are 5G enabled on networks that offer 5G to business and IoT customers. Tell us you need 5G and we will make sure the tariff includes it.
Is 5G coverage good enough to replace broadband?
In many areas, yes. We recommend a signal survey or trial at the exact location before relying on 5G as the only connection.
Can a 5G router hold two SIMs?
Many can. A dual SIM 5G router with SIMs on two different network groups is a strong setup for sites that cannot go offline.
